Do you know that our beautiful campus is an arboretum?
The campus was first referred to as an arboretum in May 1879, and today there are approximately 190 species of trees and shrubs in the arboretum. Spring 2020 Buchanan Library Fellows created tree tours on the Vanderbilt Arboretum Website that are designed to make use of your portable device (smartphone or iPad) as you walk around campus, locating historic trees and giving the history of the trees and the university through links to additional information on the Arboretum website. Pictures compare these beauties of today to what they looked like in the early years. Take a self-guided tree tour today!
Wow your friends by introducing them to the tree that is older than the University, and the tree that has a single branch that stretches 21 meters (69 feet), among other interesting campus tree facts.
