A series of workshops are starting next week including Python, R Series, and Modalities of Text Mining!
Python Series
These lessons allow learners to develop programming skills as part of a group of learners working through the curriculum together, or on their own and at their own pace. They are designed to get you started using Python in Jupyter notebooks and teach the basics of the Python language.
Two identical cycles of beginner lessons will be offered during the spring semester:
First cycle: Wednesdays from 1-2 PM, February 3 – March 10
Second cycle: Thursdays from 1-2 PM, March 18 – April 22

R Series
These lessons allow learners to develop programming skills as part of a group of learners working through the curriculum together, or on their own and at their own pace.
Two identical cycles of beginner lessons will be offered during the spring semester. They are designed to get you started using R through the popular RStudio interface. In addition to helping beginners set up the software, it will introduce the basic R data structures and will teach the basics of manipulating data, calculating basic statistics, and making simple plots.
First cycle: Thursdays from 1-2 PM, February 4 – March 11
Second cycle: Wednesdays from 1-2 PM, March 17 – April 21
Another series will cover data visualization in R using ggplot — the most popular R package for visualizing data. In this intermediate lesson series, we will introduce the Grammar of Graphics philosophy that underpins ggplot, then learn to generate a variety of types of visualizations. Introductory-level experience with R is helpful, but not required for participation. Schedule TBD.

Modalities of Text Mining: Exploring British Periodicals at Scale Series
Schedule: Fridays 2:15-3:30, beginning Feb 05
How can you identify and explore patterns across millions of documents? These lessons will focus on state-of-the-art techniques for text mining at scale. Participants will join an ongoing research project to analyze constellations of information in Proquest’s British Periodicals Collections. Contact: Cliff Anderson
