Dewey Data, an academic research platform that provides access to commercial, third-party datasets, is now available to Vanderbilt users, courtesy of the Jean and Alexander Heard Libraries.
Dewey Data acts as a central hub where students, faculty and researchers can license and combine premium data from various industry-leading providers through a single, centralized portal. Available datasets span corporate finance and the workforce, real estate and construction, consumer insights and transactions, mobility and location, weather and climate data, and more. The platform is designed for university researchers to integrate alternative datasets into their work without the need to negotiate individual licenses.
“Our subscription to Dewey Data adds significant value to the Vanderbilt research community because it saves researchers both time and money in procuring useful datasets,” said Chuck Knight, business information librarian for collections. “Usually, they would have to spend their research dollars to purchase a license to datasets that can only be used by that researcher and their team. The Heard Libraries’ subscription will allow any current faculty, student or staff member to access the datasets within the platform for free.”
Key features of the Dewey Data platform include:
- Unlimited access to hundreds of datasets from the more than 30 providers included in the subscription
- The ability to create projects so that users can organize and manage collaborators
- API (Application Programming Interface) connections to download large datasets and communicate and share data automatically in real time
- Model Context Protocol (MCP) integration for connecting to AI assistants
- Datasets compatible with large language models and other AI when used with Vanderbilt’s ChatGPT Edu subscription or Amplify generative AI software
- Datasets that include Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs) for citation purposes
