Young people and their families will explore science, engineering and coding through hands-on autumn-themed activities at Fall Into STEAM, hosted by Vanderbilt’s Peabody Library on Saturday, Oct. 25. The free event, open to children ages 3 and up, including those with special needs, will be from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Science, technology, engineering, art and math (STEAM) will come to life at playful stations featuring scarecrows, pumpkins, robots and more. All resources at the event—including STEM Bins® and Botley® 2.0 coding robots—are part of the Peabody Library’s collection and support creative, inclusive early learning.
Several special guests will be on hand to interact with participants, including Meghan Riling, assistant professor of the practice of mathematics in Vanderbilt’s Department of Teaching and Learning; Creea Shannon, a Ph.D. student in the Department of Biomedical Informatics; and representatives from the Heard Libraries’ GIS Lab and the Nashville Public Library.
There also will be giveaways of STEM picture books by Shannon, author of STEM Inspires Me, and Carlotta Berry, PhD’03, author of the There’s a Robot series, as well as free food at the event.
Registration for Fall Into STEAM is open now through Oct. 10. Participants are encouraged to register in advance for planning purposes. Once registered, more details regarding the event will follow via email. The Peabody Library is located at 1210 21st Ave. S.
Fall Into STEAM is among more than 40 educational events in Middle Tennessee and nearly 80 across the state taking place as part of the ninth annual Tennessee STEAM Festival Oct. 10–26. The festival was founded by the Discovery Center at Murfree Spring and incorporates events hosted by a wide range of museums, schools, community centers and other organizations.
The festival’s popular STEAM-a-Palooza returns this year on Saturday, Oct. 11, from noon to 4 p.m. at the Discovery Center in Murfreesboro. This free outdoor event, held rain or shine, features local artists, scientists and engineers for all-ages hands-on fun. In addition, the Discovery Center’s general admission for indoor exhibits will be half-price from noon to 4 p.m. on Oct. 11.
