The Jean and Alexander Heard Libraries hosted more than 100 library professionals from 21 U.S. states and Canada at the 2024 Southeastern Resource Sharing Conference held Oct. 3–4 on the Vanderbilt University campus.
Resource sharing experts representing nearly 75 institutions and organizations met for two days at the Student Life Center to discuss best practices and emerging trends in their profession. Through resource sharing, libraries participate in the cooperative exchange of books, journals, audiovisual materials and digital content, enabling their patrons to benefit from access to these materials regardless of location.
Noted library technologist Marshall Breeding delivered the conference’s keynote address, “The Future of Resource Sharing and the Library Landscape.” Breeding is the creator and editor of Library Technology Guides and the libraries.org online directory of libraries on the web. He previously served as director for innovative technologies and research at the Heard Libraries and as executive director of the Vanderbilt Television News Archive. The conference also featured a dozen presentations, four panel discussions, a poster session and a networking opportunity with vendors.
Vanderbilt’s Robyn Weisman, director of resource-sharing services, and Miriam Wnuk, assistant manager for resource-sharing services, co-chaired the 2024 conference, and Ashli Wells, head of access services at the Alyne Queener Massey Law Library, served on the planning team. Melissa Mallon, associate university librarian for teaching and learning, provided the welcome talk.
