Sympathetic Magic: Objects of Faith, Healing and Transformation | April 8 – July 25, 2021

Throughout history and across the planet, people have perpetually been inspired to create art and objects to promote faith, healing and transformation. This exhibition presents works from Vanderbilt University Collections, ranging from ancient Egyptian and pre-Columbian votives to divination systems from China, Africa and the American South. Also on view are artworks by contemporary artists, including Vanderbilt University Department of Art faculty María Magdalena Campos-Pons, Raheleh Filsoofi and  Jana Harper, who draw insight from diverse backgrounds and distinct materials as a means to create experiences that transcend physicality. Joining artworks and artifacts that diverge widely in origin and intention, Sympathetic Magic aims to demonstrate a steadfast and uniquely human belief in the transformative power of art.
