This 1,600 page, three-volume set is the comprehensive resource for restoration of string instruments and bows. For more than 250 years, violin, viola, cello, and bass bows have been crafted from the wood of the Pernambuco tree native to Brazil. The effects of deforestation and climate change are causing extensive damage to the Pernambuco’s ecosystem, leading to the creation of the International Pernambuco Conservation Project (IPCI). The major contribution of the Canadian chapter of IPCI is the publication of The Conservation, Restoration, and Repair of Stringed Instruments and Their Bows. The 150 essays (selected by peer-review) and 1,300 illustrations offer a conservationist approach to restoration and repair of these instruments and their bows to preserve them for future generations.
The Wilson Music Library was able to acquire this set by applying for end-of-year funds available to all Vanderbilt University libraries. These volumes will be held in the vault, but we encourage anyone who would like to use them to speak to a member of the library staff so we can make them available.
