African American Communities is a diverse range of primary source material which focuses on race relations across social, political, cultural and religious arenas. Predominantly focusing on Atlanta, Chicago, St. Louis, New York, and North Carolina, some of the key topics covered by this collection include; racism, discrimination, desegregation, urban renewal and housing, civil rights movements and protests, community integration and expressions of a unique African American culture conveyed through the work of artists, writers, actors and musicians.

In addition to correspondence, pamphlets, photographs, 360-degree objects, maps, ephemera, and legal records, the collection includes an interactive exhibition on the African American community of Weeksville and an interactive video player which showcases oral histories of individuals involved in the civil rights movement in Atlanta, personal accounts from Weeksville residents, and interviews with African American artists.
