Renowned artist, illustrator and typographer Claire Van Vliet will provide a very special talk at Vanderbilt University’s Central Library Community Room on November 7, 10:30 – 11:30 a.m. In 1955, Claire Van Vliet started Janus Press, a small independent press dedicated to the idea of the finest quality craftsmanship and the collaborative spirit. Over the past 58 years, Van Vliet has worked with such internationally-acclaimed writers as Seamus Heaney, Galway Kinnell, Hayden Carruth, Rita Dove and Denise Levertov. A 1989 John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation Prize Fellow, Van Vliet was elected to the National Academy of Design in 1995 and holds honorary doctorates from the University of Arts in Philadelphia and from San Diego State University. Her talk at Vanderbilt will focus on the history of Janus Press.
