As noted in MyVU, on November 9 the Vanderbilt Board of Trust voted to name the new residential colleges and halls at Kissam in honor of leaders from Vanderbilt’s history. Three of those figures have a special connection to the library, with materials housed in our Special Collections. There, you’ll find the papers of civil rights activist Reverend Kelly Miller Smith and of legendary sportswriter Grantland Rice, who will be honored in Kissam’s Smith and Rice Halls. We also hold a collection of materials about and by writer Robert Penn Warren, who is recognized in Kissam’s Warren College. Recently, the library partnered with the Robert Penn Warren Center to create a website of Warren’s interviews with civil rights leaders, conducted for his 1965 book, Who Speaks for the Negro?
